WHAT DID I LIKE AND DISLIKE ABOUT ONLINE TEACHING?
What I liked about online teaching was that I could finally learn and experience how to guide my own 21st century class. I liked learning new ways of teaching without physically being there with all the learners. What I disliked about online teaching was that when I asked questions it took a bit of time for the learners to answer them, and in that time as the teacher I could not tell if they were confused or just not paying attention to the lesson.
WHAT NEW SKILLS DID I LEARN THROUGH THIS EXPERIENCE?
The new skill that I had learnt when teaching online is how to make good use of online resources such as a YouTube video or an online game or even both in the same lesson. This has given me an opportunity to be conscious of my time and to understand if learners are following in the lesson. Another new skill that I had learnt was to be able to speak online without any physical people around to teach. Another skill that was learnt during this time of online teaching was time management and when to move on to the next part when teaching the lesson.
WHAT WOULD I DO DIFFERENTLY?
The thing that I would do differently in the online lesson would be to ask the learners to speak with their mic's on so that I know that they are participating, and another aspect that I would change in my online lesson is when I ask questions I will ask specific learners to answer different questions as it is always the same learners that answer the questions.
DID I CHOOSE APPROPRIATE TOOLS TO TEACH MY ONLINE LESSON, EXPLAIN WHY?
I do believe that when teaching the online lesson that I did make a good choice in choosing appropriate online tools to teach the lesson. The reason for this is that I chose to teach the content by making use of a very short YouTube video and an online Trivia game which had indeed kept the learners attention and they had each participated. I had also been given feedback from the other students that the lesson was active and that it kept their attention throughout and that it would be good for the grade 7 learners to teach that content.
HOW HAS THIS EXPERIENCE DEVELOPED ME FOR TEACHING IN A SCHOOL?
This experience has developed me for teaching in school by giving me an idea of how teaching would be when learners are not paying attention in the class. It has also developed me into seeing what kind of activities the learners would be more active in when sitting in a class and listening in a class where they can be active. From this experience I had learnt how to develop lessons and activities that can incorporate all learners and even learners who have access to technological devices.
